Your Manuscript Belongs to You: Introducing the Writer’s Desk

The Writer's Desk on Taper
The Writer’s Desk: chapter sidebar, clean page view, and everything you need to stay in your story.

Your manuscript is the most personal thing you’ll ever create. A world you built from nothing, characters who only exist because you imagined them, prose you’ve rewritten a hundred times to get exactly right.

It deserves a home that treats it that way.

Today we want to talk about the Writer’s Desk — Taper’s built-in word processor, and why we built it with two non-negotiable commitments: end-to-end encryption and a hard promise that your writing will never be used to train an AI.

A Word Processor Built for Querying Authors

Most word processors were designed for offices. The Writer’s Desk is different — designed from scratch for authors working toward a query. It lives right inside Taper, next to your submission tracker, your agent watchlist, and your author profile. Your draft and your query journey are finally in the same place.

Clean, Chapter-Organized, Distraction-Free

The interface is intentionally minimal. A clean page, a chapter sidebar, and the tools you actually need — formatting, headings, highlights, comments — without the tools you don’t. Chapters live in the sidebar so you can navigate without losing your place. It works the way a writer actually thinks — in scenes and chapters, not in scrolling kilometers of text.

End-to-End Encrypted. Your Words, Only Yours.

Here’s something most writing software won’t say plainly: we cannot read your manuscript.

Everything you write in the Writer’s Desk is end-to-end encrypted. Your work is encrypted on your device before it ever leaves it. It arrives at our servers in a form we can store but cannot read. When you open it again, it’s decrypted locally — only for you. Not because we’re legally required to. Not as a premium add-on. Because it’s the right way to treat a writer’s work.

Your Writing Will Never Train an AI. Full Stop.

This one matters to us a lot — and we suspect it matters to you too.

The AI industry has a habit of treating creative work as raw material. Your novel drafts, your voice, your years of craft development — all fair game for training the next model, unless you explicitly opt out. Taper’s position is simple: your writing is not data. It will never be used to build, fine-tune, or improve any AI model — ours or anyone else’s. This is not a setting you have to find. It’s a commitment baked into how the product works. The encryption enforces it — we technically cannot access your work to use it that way.

The Bigger Picture

We built the Writer’s Desk because querying authors shouldn’t have to stitch together five different apps just to write and submit. But we also built it because the tools authors use should be on their side. Writing a novel is an act of trust. The software you use to do it should earn that trust too.
